Get Out of the Boat

He walked on water. When we think of this story, Jesus is likely who comes to mind. But this time it was Peter! Because he trusted and obeyed Jesus, he experienced his own miracle moment.
When I read this passage, the first part jumps out, “Peter got down out of the boat.” What if he stayed in the boat? It was safe. There was a gaping abyss that stood between him and Jesus. The boat provided protection against the beating waves. Who would blame Peter for staying in the boat? None of the other disciples moved.
With Jesus’ invitation “Come,” Peter immediately stepped out and walked on the raging sea toward his Savior. Peter’s faith ushered in a miracle – and it started with a decision. He had to take that first step of obedience.
If we desire to follow Jesus, obedience to the Lord's calling will be a daily decision. Just like Peter, we will be called to step out of our comfort zones – and it won’t be easy. The boat is comfortable, and it’s safe. Stepping out in faith is scary and can be filled with many unknowns and turbulent waves to conquer. It’s easier to stay where we are.
But God has a much better and bigger plan for our lives. Just like Peter, we have to take that first step. And when we do, Jesus will be right there with us. Our miracle moment awaits!
What first step can you take today to get out of your comfort zone to grow in your trust in Jesus?
Lord, we like to be comfortable and safe. Empower us – like Peter – to be obedient when you call us out of our comfort zones and into the unknown. Amen.
